In music we watched sections of the
film Koyaansiqatsi.
We agreed the film was unusual because it didn’t
use words and didn’t have a story. We recognised
the films themes were Nature contrasted with Human life,
pollution and how humans are destroying the planet.
We noted how early in the film you don’t see any
people, then you see explosions from quarrying activity
and then a huge lorry is engulfed in black smoke. We
noted a few other favourite moments. One scene reminded
us of 11/7. We recognised that the speed of the action
in the film increases steadily from start to finish
but that the end is slow.
We learnt that the music was by Philip Glass, a minimalist
composer. He uses a few notes repeatedly with occasional
changes. We talked about how the music matched the film
and how the images were often edited to coincide with
changes in the music.
