In maths we used Multimap
to find the school. We changed the scale on the maps
so we could find all our homes. We measured how far
we all lived from school.
We found the mean distance travelled to school in our
class was 1.8 miles but that the modal distance was
closer to 1 mile. A few people travelling relatively
long distances caused this difference. Most students
walked to school. Those who travelled further arrived
by car or bus. We were fairly confident in our findings
but know our class is a small sample and a bigger survey
would be needed to draw serious conclusions.
We thought our new bigger better school would attract
more students. It may be that most local children already
come to this school so additional students would come
from further away. If it the school becomes a specialist
college the mean distance travelled to school would
be expected to increase further.
More students will bring more money into local shops
but extra traffic would be unwelcome. Cycle routes and
secure cycle racks could encourage students to cycle.
There is a train line close to the school that isn’t
used for local stops, if it were students could travel
in from Moseley, Kings Heath and beyond in this efficient
way. Maybe school buses could be commissioned.
